Thomaston, the county seat of Upson County since 1825, remembers General Jett Thomas, leader of the state militia in 1812 and builder of the state capital in Milledgeville.
The Upson County courthouse, built in 1908, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. History lovers can also visit the Thomaston-Upson Archives, which provides historical and genealogical information for residents throughout the county.
Each May Thomaston hosts the Emancipation Proclamation Celebration. This local event is the nation's oldest and longest running celebration of its kind and includes keynote speeches, a parade and a candlelight prayer service for the community.
