Walker County originated in 1833. Drawn from the original Cherokee County and part of Murray County, the region owes its name to Major Freeman Walker of Augusta, a lawyer and U.S. senator. Although residents first called the county seat by its Indian name, Chattooga, they later renamed it to honor the Marquis de Lafayette. In 1835, Lafayette, too soon familiar with violence, housed a fort that held Cherokee people until their forced removal west, and then, in 1863, Walker County witnessed 34,000 Union and Confederate deaths at Chickamauga, a battle often considered the second bloodiest of the Civil War.
