Get Real ID-Compliant

Federal law requires states to issue driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet enhanced security standards. These credentials are commonly known as REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs.

Beginning May 7, 2025, federal agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), require travelers to present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card, or another TSA-approved form of identification, to board domestic commercial flights and access certain federal facilities.

REAL ID in Georgia

The Georgia Department of Driver’s Services (DDS) refers to its REAL ID-compliant driver's licenses and ID cards as Secure IDs.

If your Georgia driver's license or identification card displays either a gold or black star in the upper-right corner, your credential is already REAL ID-compliant, and no additional action is required.

Georgia Secure ID credentials meet federal REAL ID requirements and are accepted for federal identification purposes where REAL ID is required.

Do I Need a REAL ID?

You may not need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card if you use another accepted form of identification.

Travelers may continue to use:

  • A valid U.S. passport
  • A U.S. passport card
  • Military identification
  • Trusted Traveler cards and other TSA-approved forms of identification

A REAL ID-compliant license or ID is simply one option for meeting federal identification requirements.
