How Do I …
Transfer my Out-of-State License?
-
Get Prepared
- Be prepared for the Department of Drivers Services (DDS) to take your photo.
- You must surrender your current out-of-state license.
- If your out-of-state license, permit, or ID was lost or stolen, you must provide a certified driving record or Motor Vehicle Report from the state that issued it. The report must be dated within the last 60 days.
- You must be at least 18 years old, or 17 with an equivalent Class C driver’s license.
- All documents you bring must be in English.
-
Gather What You'll Need
- Original documentation showing your identity, residential address, Social Security number, and U.S. citizenship or proof of lawful status in the United States. (Check Real ID requirements for more information.)
- You must provide your full Social Security number on the required license, ID, or permit form. If your Social Security number can't be verified, you may need to provide additional proof.
- 2 documents proving Georgia residency (such as a bank statement, utility bill, or rental contract)
- Current out-of-state driver’s license (not expired for more than 2 years)
- License fee. DDS Customer Service Centers accept cash, credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
-
Transfer Your License
- You must transfer your license in person at your local DDS Customer Service Center.
- Before visiting a DDS Customer Service Center, submit the required license, ID, or permit form online. Your information will remain on file for 60 days.
- Take the required vision exam.
- A staff member will check your documents, collect your fee, and take your photo.
- DDS will process your application and provide next steps for receiving your Georgia license.
-
Next Steps
