Vehicle Taxes

In Georgia, residents pay one of two types of taxes on motor vehicles.

Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT)

TAVT is a one-time tax paid at the time the vehicle is titled. This applies to most vehicles purchased on or after March 1, 2013. TAVT is paid:

  • Every time vehicle ownership is transferred
  • When a new Georgia resident registers their vehicle for the first time

Ad Valorem Tax

Annual Ad Valorem tax is a value tax that is assessed annually and must be paid at the time of registration. This applies to most vehicles not taxed under TAVT or alternative ad valorem tax.
