Department of Public Safety

The Georgia Department of Public Safety oversees the day-to-day operations of the Georgia State Patrol, Capitol Police, and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement.

GSP troopers investigate traffic crashes and enforce traffic and criminal laws on state roads. Capitol Police officers protect the State Capitol and surrounding area by preventing and investigating crime and ensuring compliance with traffic laws. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers promote commercial vehicle safety and ensure compliance with laws governing hazardous materials transportation and vehicle size and weight.

The Department also regulates for-hire intrastate passenger and household goods carriers and oversees the non-consensual towing program. In addition, it administers the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) and Georgia Intrastate Motor Carrier Registration programs for commercial motor carriers.
