Report Elder Abuse

If you suspect elder abuse, report it immediately to Adult Protective Services.

Adult Protective Services (APS) investigates reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of adults 65 and older, or 18 and older with a disability, who do not reside in long-term care facilities. Reporting is confidential.

To report suspected abuse in a long-term care facility, contact the Georgia Department of Community Health, Healthcare Facility Regulation at 1-800-878-6442.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. If you want to request a welfare check, call local law enforcement

    Some adults may be at higher risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Types of elder abuse include:

  • Gather What You’ll Need

    You’ll need to provide sufficient information in your report to Adult Protective Services in order for a caseworker to be able to investigate the incident. This includes:

    • Name and address of alleged victim
    • Description of the incident involving suspected elder abuse.
    • Information regarding possible drug or alcohol abuse, domestic violence, weapons, or other safety issues.
  • Report Suspected Abuse

    You can report elder abuse by phone or online.

    • By Phone
      • Call Georgia’s Aging and Disability Network at 1-866-552-4464, select your preferred language option, and select option 3 to report abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a disabled adult or senior citizen.
      • When you submit your report, ask for the case number. Keep a copy of this case number for your records.
      • Reports are accepted by phone Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Online
      • Visit the online APS intake form.
      • Follow the prompts to submit a report of suspected elder abuse.
      • When you submit your report online, you will receive a case number. Keep a copy of this case number for your records.
  • Next Steps

    • You should receive a follow-up call within 48 hours. If you don’t, call during business hours to follow up on your report.
    • APS has 10 calendar days to respond to a referral.
    • An APS caseworker will be assigned to investigate the report, visit the subject, and perform an assessment. A caseworker may be accompanied by local law enforcement.
    • APS will determine if abuse has occurred and send a report to law enforcement.
